The event will involve a discussion of A/Prof Yee-Fui Ng’s recently published book, Combatting the Code: Regulating Automated Government Decision-Making in Comparative Context (published April 2025)
Associate Professor Yee-Fui Ng is an Associate Professor and Director (Higher Degree by Research) at Monash University who researches in the areas of public law and political integrity. She is the author of Combatting the Code: Regulating Automated Government Decision-Making in Comparative Context (Cambridge University Press, 2025), The Rise of Political Advisors in the Westminster System (Routledge, 2018) and Ministerial Advisers in Australia: The Modern Legal Context (Federation Press, 2016), which was a Holt Prize finalist. Yee-Fui was a 2021-22 Fulbright Scholar and undertook research at New York University on the digital welfare state. Her work has been cited by the High Court of Australia, State supreme courts, Federal and State parliaments, as well as various government inquiries. In 2023, Yee-Fui was the winner of the Monash University Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence by an Early Career Researcher (HASS) (the University’s highest honour for outstanding research excellence and impact).
Dr Jason Harkess is a practising barrister at the Victorian Bar and lectures Administrative Law at Monash University. He served as a member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (2018-2022) and was a detention review officer under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 (Vic) during the COVID-19 pandemic. His current research examines the intersection of artificial intelligence and legal practice, exploring how emerging technologies impact fundamental legal principles and professional obligations. He is the current Treasurer of the Australian Institute of Administrative Law (Victorian Chapter).
